Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, daily husbandry and care of the birds exhibited within the Aquarium. This includes, but may not be limited to, three species of penguins and three species of alcids. Must be willing to work in a fast-paced and highly changing environment. Must be available to work holidays and weekends, as scheduling dictates.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
- Have or develop the appropriate level of knowledge of the natural history and captive management of the bird species in their care, ensuring their best possible physical and psychological well-being.
- Animal husbandry including, but not limited to, cleaning, feeding, and enrichment.
- Monitor behavior and changes in animal health.
- Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the building and grounds.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Strong communication and organizational skills, including attention to detail.
- Knowledge of a safe working environment for animal collection, employees and visitors.
- Ability to work independently, when familiar with operational procedures.
- Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers, other departments, and management.
- Willingness to speak publicly to large and small groups.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
- Will lift, push, pull and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
- Highly physical environment.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions and climates.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, reach upward, twist, and have good lateral movement.
- The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and talk and hear.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have valid state driver’s license.
- Candidates for this position are required to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.
