Job Overview: 

We are seeking a dynamic ANIMAL KEEPER 1 or 2 to join our team! This person will work under the supervision of the Lead Keeper and Curatorial Staff. This individual will ensure and promote the effective and efficient care of the department’s animal collection.

Essential Functions for a Level 1 Keeper:
  • Responsible for the daily husbandry of the animal collection (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects) including preparation of diets, medical care, required record keeping, cleaning and maintenance of the animal exhibit space.
  • Establishing and maintaining an environment conducive to the health and wellbeing of the animal collection.
  • Cleaning and maintaining of exhibits, quarantine, and service areas for the animal collection.
  • Animal training and educational animal encounters as required.
  • Coordinates daily activities though effective communication with staff and volunteers.
  • Assists museum staff & visitors as needed in a pleasant, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned to achieve the goals and mission of Wonders of Wildlife.
Essential Functions for a Level 2 Keeper:
  • Responsible for the daily husbandry of the animal collection (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects) including preparation of diets, medical care, required record keeping, cleaning and maintenance  of the animal exhibit space.
  • Establishing and maintaining an environment conducive to the health and wellbeing of the animal collection.
  • Cleaning and maintaining of exhibits, quarantine, and service areas for the animal collection.
  • Animal training and educational animal encounters as required.
  • Coordinates daily activities though effective communication with staff and volunteers.
  • Assists museum staff & visitors as needed in a pleasant, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Oversee training and education of volunteers and interns; provide mentorship for less experienced staff.
  • Participate in internal animal care committees (Training, Enrichment, etc.)
  • Participate as an active member of a professional association (AAZK, AZA, IAATE, etc.)
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned to achieve the goals and mission of Wonders of Wildlife.
MINIMUM Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education for a Level 1 Keeper:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field is required; equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a four-year degree at the discretion of WOW.
  • Minimum three-month internship in a professional animal facility working with Mammals, bird, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
  • Ability to work well within a team environment and the discipline to work individually with minimal supervision.
  • Requires a high degree of concentration and attention to the needs of the collection. Must have precise record keeping and the ability to follow and convey written and verbal instructions. Must possess the analytical skills necessary to trouble shoot mechanical issues and animal behavioral issues.
  • Requires walking/standing approximately 75% of the time, sitting 10% of the time, forward bending and crouching 15% of the time, lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to pass all required physicals and swim test to meet AAUS standards
  • Requires proficiency with Personal Computer (P.C.) hardware and contemporary software including Microsoft Office Products.
  • Requires capability of performing essential job functions in holding areas, exhibit spaces and mechanical rooms where spaces are small and tight, and in office environments with climate control and good lighting.
  • Requires the ability to provide proof of a negative TB test
  • Willingness to receive rabies vaccine

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field is required; equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a four-year degree at the discretion of WOW.
  • Four years’ experience in a professional animal facility working with Mammals, bird, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
  • Ability to work well within a team environment and the discipline to work individually with minimal supervision.
  • Experience shaping animal behaviors using operant conditioning.
  • Experience with making, distributing, observing, and recording enrichment
  • Experience supervising interns and/or volunteers
  • Requires a high degree of concentration and attention to the needs of the collection. Must have precise record keeping and the ability to follow and convey written and verbal instructions.
