Aquaculture and Conservation Curator

The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is looking to hire an emergency position for Marine Aquarium Curator II. The Curator (Aquaculture and Conservation Curator) is a key leader in the Aquarium’s mission, overseeing the Aquatic Nursery personnel and managing aquaculture, animal care, and conservation initiatives, including the White Abalone Recovery and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) SAFE Sunflower Sea Star program. 

  • Committed to positive leadership, the Curator fosters a collaborative and inclusive work environment, mentoring a team of approximately 10-12 staff members.
  • Additionally, the Curator oversees the Aquatic Nursery Internship and Volunteer Program and collaborates with the Research Educator to support the Young Scientists Program.
  • Lead and oversee all aquaculture, animal care, and conservation programs, ensuring their continued success and sustainability.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of staff members, interns, and volunteers, fostering excellence in animal care and aquaculture operations.
  • Drive innovation in aquaculture techniques and conservation strategies through collaboration with Aquarium staff and industry partners.
  • Manage the development and care of Aquatic Nursery exhibits in partnership with the Exhibits Curator, enhancing public engagement with marine conservation outreach.
  • Participate in scientific collection activities, including boat and dive operations, to support research and conservation efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with CMA animal care policies and AZA standards by maintaining accurate records of aquaculture and
  • animal care operations.
  • Serve as an active member of the Aquarium’s Animal Welfare Committee and Research & Conservation Committee.
  • Contribute to the Aquarium’s research education programs, supporting meaningful learning experiences for middle school, high school, and college students.
Experience Required
  • A valid CA Driver’s License
  • Graduation from a recognized four-year college of university with a major in a life science or education
  • One year of full-time paid professional experience assisting in the acquisition and preparation of marine specimens for display or developing and implementing marine education programs for the general public at an aquarium or zoo environment.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical aspects of marine life support systems
  • Knowledge of the ecology and natural history of marine life
  • Ability to convey a favorable public image while engaging with the public
  • Must be responsible, dependable, and communicative with supervisors and their team
  • Ability to follow directions and work under minimum supervision
  • Must be able to lift and move 70 lbs.
Salary
  • Salary: $34.81/hour
