Aquarium Birds Keeper

We are seeking a keeper in the Aquarium Birds department. The keepers in the Aquarium Birds department are responsible for the daily feeding, cleaning, and general care of the two exhibits in the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium. This includes, but is not limited to, the Penguins and Alcids. This position reports to the Birds Supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
  • Daily care of animal collection.
  • Record daily feed and animal observations.
  • Animal enrichment.
  • Monitor behavior and changes in animal health.
  • Assist veterinary staff with procedures of animals in collection.
  • Perform cold water diving.
  • Interact with zoo guests and provide informational facts on aquarium birds.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • B.S. or B.A. in Biology or related field preferred.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Scuba certified preferred.
  • Knowledge of propagation, incubation, hand rearing techniques, operant conditioning, and enrichment techniques.
  • Open Water I certification preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to swim proficiently.
  • Candidates might be required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative TB test, and possess a valid drivers license with a good history.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
  • Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some night programs.
  • Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
  • Ability to work long hours in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.
  • Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
