Aquarium Zookeeper

The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium is seeking a Full-time Aquarium Keeper to care for the aquatic animals and habitats in our collection. This position is responsible for performing a variety of duties related to the maintenance of exhibits and daily husbandry for the care and wellbeing of all animals in the aquarium.  This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires 40 hours per scheduled workweek.  Work schedules include weekdays, weekends, and can include holidays.

• Essential Job Functions:  Duties will include, but are not limited to monitoring and reporting on the following  
• Daily observation and recording of animal health.
• Diet preparations and feedings.
• Maintenance of enclosures and aquatic life-support systems including water changes and filter backwashes.
• Maintain high standards for area and exhibit cleanliness. Some exhibits require diving to clean.
• Participating in guest engagement activities including talks and tours
• Actively supporting and implementing department policies, procedures and protocols to ensure the highest standards of care of the collection and the safety of staff and visitors
• Participating in collaborative efforts in regards to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research and education
• Maintaining a positive attitude, while communicating and collaborating with team members

Minimum Training and Experience:

• Experience in the care and maintenance of aquatic animals in fresh and saltwater aquariums is required.
• Must have knowledge of water quality and life support systems. 
• 1 year paid experience in a public aquarium preferred, or an equivalent combination of education/experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
• Must be at least 18 years of age or older. 
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Zoo fleet insurance carrier. 
• Open Water Dive certification required, must be completed within one month of start date.
• First Aid, CPR, AED and emergency O2 provider certification required.
• Must be willing to receive the necessary inoculations needed to work in the department.
• Must have the physical ability to work on your feet up to 8 hours a day and be able to walk the zoo grounds for several hours at a time. 
• Candidates must also have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in the summer heat and winter cold.

Salary

• $17.67
