Biologist II - Birds and Mammals

The position requires a dedicated individual who will take direction from the General Curator and Assistant Curator of Birds and Mammals, and/or Aquarium Operations Director in carrying out the operations of the mammal, reptile or avian exhibits of the aquarium. This includes all aspects of animal husbandry, exhibit maintenance and holding area management.  The position will participate in and assist with the development of the mammal and bird-training program, which will consist of a behavioral demonstration presented to the public on a scheduled basis by the biologists.  The position will also be responsible for maintaining organized written records pertaining to health, feeding, water quality and behavioral observations. The priorities for this position include fostering a positive work team atmosphere, attention to animal health, exhibit and guest experience excellence.

What you’d be doing

  • As a member of the Husbandry team, you will lead by example by being patient, kind, humble, respectful, selfless, forgiving, honest and committed when interacting with one another and guests.
  • Provides for the needs of all animals in the mammal or avian exhibit, Hippo Haven, Penguin Island, Little Blue Beach and Ambassador Animals, by doing regular daily feedings, exhibit cleaning, and holding building maintenance.
  • Maintains records pertaining to feeding levels, water quality analysis, behavioral observations, training activities and medical procedures.
  • Carriers out a training program directed toward public demonstrations that is presented on a regular basis.
  • Under the direction of supervisors, help develop public program demonstration strategies and training procedures that will lead to the development of entertaining and educational shows for the public.
  • Participates in public shows.
  • Keeps work area clean and organized and reports mechanical failures to supervisors in a timely way.
  • Cooperates with Animal Health Services staff for animal care health issues. Includes veterinary procedures as a regular part of training program.
  • At the direction of managers, interact with and responds to public/media requests for information. Participates in Aquarium related education, public relations and membership programs including facility tours and lectures.
  • Assists in collecting and other Husbandry department activities when needed.
  • Cross-trains with other staff within Husbandry and Animal Health Services.
  • Complies with safety and security directives, policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • This position has been identified as Safety Critical with authorized operator requirements.
What we are looking for

  • A Bachelor's Degree in biology or related field is preferred (years of experience may be substituted for a degree)
  • Three years (four to five years without a degree) of professional avian or mammal husbandry, training and performance experience at a public aquarium, zoo or related institution. Emphasis should be on animal care and maintenance of exhibit and holding areas. Must demonstrate discipline and have a proven track record of consistent high performance.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which will include weekends and/or evenings and holidays.
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to drive small - medium size trucks
  • Ability to respond to emergencies on an on-call
  • A certification from a recognized S.C.U.B.A. training organization is preferred

Pay Range 44k to 47k

Special Requirements
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening.
  • Capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor.
  • No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely perform the job
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Note:   Position will involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species, and potentially dangerous machinery, restraint devices, toxic chemicals and/or drugs.  Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required. (e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns)
