Commissary Steward

Under general supervision, prepares food for animal consumption.  Work involves packaging, dividing and mixing food.  Performs administrative duties such as ordering supplies, making diet changes and maintaining inventory.  Reports to the Director of Animal Health and Nutrition. This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires forty hours per scheduled workweek. 

Essential Job Functions

• Prepares food for animal consumption; packages, divides, and mixes foods. 
• Receives and inspects food supplies. 
• Delivers food items to various departments.
• Performs administrative duties such as ordering supplies, making diet changes, attending meetings, and maintaining inventory.  
• Cleans work area after food preparation. 
• Makes off-grounds deliveries and pick-ups.
• Sends hay core samples for analysis upon request.
• Receives and reviews billing invoices, telephone calls, diet change forms, food item request forms, rebate checks and budget statements. 
• Prepares purchase orders, budget, maintenance work orders, warehouse orders, memos, Commissary manual, updates, etc. 
• Operates and utilizes various types of machines and equipment in the performance of duties including a motor vehicle, forklift, pallet stacker, pallet jack, food processor, dish washer, conveyor belt, wash/dryer, trash compactor, computer terminal, printer, CO2 chamber, hay corer etc. 
• Communicates and interacts effectively with suppliers, Chief Veterinarian, Keepers, Curators, Finance Office, sales representatives, Veterinary Department, etc. 
• Assists Chief Veterinarian with Commissary Budget preparations and analysis. 
• Performs other related duties as required

Experience Required

• Vocational certificate in Logistics or related field 
• One to two years warehouse and/or shipping and receiving experience or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. 
• Must have a valid drivers’ license and be insurable by the fleet insurance carrier. 
• Ability to lift 50 pounds, stand for prolonged period, and work outdoors in all climate types.
