Community Engagement Coordinator

The Community Engagement Coordinator supports the New England Aquarium's (NEAq) vision for a downtown waterfront that is resilient, inclusive, and accessible. The Coordinator is a self-led individual that shares our passion for equity, climate resilience, capacity sharing, and community building. The position is responsible for helping build NEAq's presence and reputation in the Greater Boston region, strengthening existing relationships and finding opportunities for new ones, and broadly engaging a diverse suite of community members and leaders.

  • This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package.
  • The schedule will be Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm (35 hours/week with a 1 hour lunch break each day) with the option for a hybrid schedule, working some days on-site and some days remotely.
  • The position will require some travel throughout the Greater Boston area for professional conferences, community meetings, and other relevant professional events.
  • These events may fall outside of regular business hours.
  • Remote days are only available for residents of MA, RI, NH, ME, NY and VT.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • In conjunction with Director of Community Engagement, assist in implementing local grassroots/grasstops advocacy and civic engagement in support of Aquarium priorities.
  • Support coordination and execution of NEAq's comprehensive community engagement strategy, including activities related to Downtown Waterfront for All, coastal resilience, DEI efforts, and local workforce development.
  • Establish relationships with community members and groups as a representative of the New England Aquarium.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound community engagement inquiries and opportunities, identifying events and/or sponsorships that align best with NEAq's strategy and pillars of work.
  • Provide administrative support to the Community Engagement department, including (but not limited to) acting as liaison to the Finance department for invoice submissions, general file management and organization, and collaborating closely with the Executive Office and other departments regarding relevant events and/or sponsorships.
  • Assist the Conservation Policy Department in other duties or projects as assigned.
  • Collaborate with Conservation Learning, Marketing and Communications, and other departments as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum Training and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working on community coordinating initiatives such as volunteering on political campaigns, event planning, or digital/written awareness campaigns.
  • Experience building and maintaining positive relationships within a community including community residents, NGO partners, and other decision makers is required. Experience building these relationships in the Greater Boston area is preferred.
  • Project management experience is required with a demonstrated ability to stay organized, establish and stick to key priorities, and deliver strong follow-up across multiple contending demands and timelines.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Curiosity about advocacy on climate resilience, protection of our natural places and species, equitable and inclusive access to ocean and coasts, environmental/ocean justice, and/or others priority aspects of NEAq's mission and work.
  • Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders expertly.
  • Comfort with public speaking and presentations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
  • Must be able to work independently and demonstrate creativity, flexibility, and initiative.

Salary
  • $24.86 - $24.87 per hour
