Conservation Horticulturist

The North Carolina Aquariums at Pine Knoll Shores is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Conservation Horticulturist. This position reports directly to the Assistant Aquarium Curator. The Conservation Horticulturist will oversee the daily maintenance and care of native and landscape plants on the Aquarium grounds and in exhibits that are used for aesthetic, education, research, and conservation purposes. 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Installation and relocation of plantings; watering, weeding, and mulching as needed to complete landscape project goals.
  • Collecting and purchasing of plants; this may require obtaining the proper permits.
  • Maintaining accurate records including pesticide and fuel logs.
  • Identifying and maintaining watering and irrigation needs of the collection.
  • Maintaining an on-site greenhouse and nursery area.
  • Implement control methods and safely handle materials to reduce pests to ensure animal, visitor, and employee safety.
  • Training the Horticulture Technician, Husbandry Technicians, and Horticulture Volunteers in horticultural techniques and safe equipment operation around visitors and the Aquarium animal collection.
  • Weekend and holiday work hours are required. Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license.

Experience Required
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies **To receive credit for your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form.
  • Any information omitted from the application form will not be considered for qualifying credit
  • Experience with planting and landscape maintenance for interior and exterior landscapes at an Aquarium, Zoo, Museum, Nature Center, Arboretum, Botanical Garden or Nursery.
  • Experience in observation of plant problems, such as disease and insect control.
  • Experience applying methods in landscaping techniques. Experience with landscaping power equipment such as UTV’s, backpack blowers, pole saws, pole pruners, chain saws, mowers, and string trimmers.
  • Experience climbing ladders, lifting heavy items, and working from heights.
  • Must obtain a North Carolina Public Pesticide Operator's Certification from North Carolina Department of Agriculture (NCDA) within 3 months of hire.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of museum or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary
  • $33,272.00 - $58,226.00 Annually
