The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is seeking a Coordinator, State Affairs to join the Government Affairs team. This role supports AZA’s government affairs activities and assists AZA members with their state legislative needs.
- This position is based in our Silver Spring, MD headquarters and reports to the Senior Vice President, External Affairs. This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.
Responsibilities
- Research, analyze, and track state legislative issues relating to AZA’s policy priorities
- Support state advocacy strategies tailored to each state’s policy environment and member needs
- Support the development of the monthly ‘In the News’ government affairs newsletter and supporting tracking documents for AZA members
- Maintain legislative databases, files, and materials
- Assist with development of issue packets and other documents and materials
- Support planning AZA’s Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C., including the annual congressional reception
- Coordinate logistics for conference calls, meetings, and briefings
- Track legislative hearings and briefings as needed
- Help coordinate activities of the AZA Government Affairs Committee
- Create content for government affairs section of the AZA website
- Attend AZA conferences and related meetings to support departmental responsibilities which may include presenting information, assisting with sessions, or coordinating activities.
- Provide administrative support to the AZA government affairs department
- Perform other duties as requested
- Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required in political science or related field
- 3+ years of experience required. Legislative experience preferred.
- Previous experience with zoos and aquariums or related organizations is a plus
Skills and Abilities
- Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills
- Knowledge of state legislative processes
- Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities and meet deadlines
- Ability to manage multiple tasks while functioning effectively as a team member under pressure
- Ability to represent AZA, its programs, and members professionally and to serve as a voice to external audiences
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with AZA staff and Association members.
Ability to travel required
- The starting compensation range for this role is $55,162 - $58,609. AZA considers a candidate’s previous experience, skills, education, and relevant qualifications, as well as internal consistency with salaries of current employees when making employment offers.
