Loveland Living Planet Aquarium is seeking a Director of Risk Management and Safety. This position oversees the physical safety and security of the organization’s facilities, property, and all people (including employees, volunteers, donors, sponsors, vendors, contractors, and guests). This position will lead organization-wide contingency planning to ensure effective continuation of operations at all times. This individual is part of the operations leadership team and envisions and implements the safety management programs necessary to support and protect those associated with the Aquarium. The Director of Risk Management and Safety will ensure organization adherence to all applicable laws, regulations, and accreditation standards within the scope of the role. Responsibilities encompass emergency procedures, safety measures, and the organization’s security operations.
Qualifications:
Combined 10 years of professional expertise which may include a combination of education and on-the-job experience (ex. Master’s degree in a relevant field OR bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and 2-4 years of on-the-job experience OR 10+ years of on-the-job experience).
Certifications:
- Safe driver with a valid driver license and no more than 2 moving violations in the past 3 years; No convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or any drugs within the past 10 years.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED Instructor (training can be made available if certification is not currently held)
- Training or knowledge of creating comprehensive workplace health and safety programs, including but not limited to, heavy equipment operation, hazardous material handling program, fall protection, confined space, lock out tag out, construction safety, first aid, blood borne pathogens, and PPE
Critical Skills/Competencies:
- Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to safety and health programs
- Extensive knowledge of firearms and weapons safety, fire prevention, and security operations.
- Experience performing job safety hazard analysis and implementing behavior-based health and safety practices
- Ability to motivate, delegate, provide leadership, counseling, conflict resolution, de-escalation, training and listening, among others to successfully implement health and safety policies and procedures, and recommend corrective action.
- Proven ability to cope with conflict, stress, and crisis situations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Lead, drive, and promote a culture and safety and excellence for employees, guests, animals, and the broader Aquarium community
- Proactively formulate solutions for short-term improvement as well as long-term sustainability
- Assess and identify trends in safety and security performance through leading indicators, data review, efficiency, and cost effectiveness
- Manage annual safety budget and annually identify and plan for budgetary and contracting needs for health and safety related items
Safety
- Develops, implements, and deploys the health and safety program from the Aquarium with the aim of zero accidents and/or incidents, including the establishment of improvement goals and operational safety activities and drills
- Prepare surveillance equipment maintenance schedules and facilitates repairs in a timely manner.
- Coordinate responses to emergencies and alarms, as well as local law enforcement and fire response.
- Ensure necessary safety equipment aligns with all applicable regulations and industry best practices.
- Manage any consumable safety inventory and schedules restocking of supplies in a timely manner.
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety management plans for the organization in compliance with all available industry, local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.
- Coordinate traumatic first aid and CPR training for the organization.
- Occasionally participate on the Aquarium’s firearms and emergency response team after proper training and background clearance
Business Continuity
- Maintain, review, and compile accident/incident reports, making recommendations for corrective actions.
- Maintain and implement all emergency preparedness, fire prevention, safety, and security policies and procedures in connection with prudent business continuity plans for the organization.
- Coordinate with Human Resources regarding OSHA reporting.
- Maintains records and documents in compliance with all regulatory and internal record keeping requirements and provides statistical data on safety performance
Security
- Lead a team of security personnel in their day-to-day duties and responsibilities.
- Collaborate cross-departmentally to determine the security needs of the organization.
- Develop training plans for security personnel and maintains security training records.
- Control the security operations budget, monitoring expenses, and documenting processes.
- Ensure surveillance equipment meets the needs of the Aquarium and is in line with industry best practices.
Risk Mitigation
- Facilitate safety meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implements follow-up assessments.
- Conduct accident investigations to identify root cause and generate recommendations to reduce or eliminate hazards and perform follow-up inspections to verify effectiveness/resolution
- Establishes, implements, and oversees effective safety and security programs and strategies that ensures the organization's compliance with OSHA, L&I, AZA and other safety and environmental standards and regulations as required
- Advise senior leaders on how to minimize short- and long-term risks of the campus
- Implement leader-on-duty, leader, and employee preventive training programs; track and report adherence
- Assist all departments in updating and maintaining safety plans, reports, equipment, chemical inventory, and MSDS files.
