Dive Safety Officer

Manage the Aquarium’s dive program, which includes the supervising, training, evaluating, documenting, and scheduling all aquarium dives with staff and volunteer divers.  Responsible for the development and enforcement of policies and procedures that ensure the safety of all Aquarium-related diving operations.

Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree - Natural Science, Physical Science, Safety Management, or related field.
  • Knowledge of diving operation needs within an Aquarium, Zoo, or similar environment. 
  • Must be an active SCUBA Instructor – certified from a nationally recognized agency. 
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Administrator certified. 
  • Knowledge of Diver’s Alert Network and DAN Oxygen Administrator certified.
Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
  • Stay appraised of current dive regulations required by OSHA and other dive-related associations. Ensure all staff divers remain in compliance with diving requirements in accordance with Dive Safety Manual, including making sure they maintain all necessary certifications and training.
  • Maintain and keep current the Dive Safety Manual.
  • Coordinate weekly scheduling of all Aquarium dive activities. Coordinate training of all new divers on staff.
  • Perform swim tests and scuba certifications.
  • Coordinate re-certification of First Aid and CPR/AED classes.
  • Coordinate communication among the volunteer and staff dive team.
  • Maintain inventory of dive gear and equipment.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and repair of equipment used for routine dives (experience as Certified Repair Technician preferred)
  • Maintain all record keeping requirements.
  • Conduct emergency water extraction training and drills.
  • Chair the Dive Safety Board and mentor Lead Dive Team.
  • Experience with aquatic animal husbandry and associated life support systems.
  • Work with Human Resources to recruit and train volunteer divers.
  • Active member of Aquarium’s Safety Committee.
  • Ensure that all employees are diving in a safe manner at all times.
