EDUCATOR I
REPORTS TO
Education Leads, Education Manager, General Curator, and Property General Manager.
STATUS
- This is a part-time entry level position.
- Pay rate is hourly.
- Must be available to work evening, weekends, and holidays.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Education Department is passionate about a number of values, which include respect for conservation, a mindset of lifelong learning, and a collaborative, respectful work environment. Educator I is an entry level position whose main roles are to interact with the public, provide excellent guest service, deliver conservation messages, and support the Aquarium’s Mission Statement.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
- Engage with Guests in a helpful, patient manner, creating a friendly and inviting atmosphere.
- Oversee Guest/animal interactions in touch tank areas.
- Maintain exhibit cleanliness during open hours including, but not limited to, cleaning acrylic/glass, sweeping floors, picking up trash, emptying trash bins, squeegeeing floors, dusting, etc.
- Provide educational exhibit and behind-the-scenes tours.
- Assist Educator II with educational programs including, but not limited to classroom programs, outreaches, Home School Day, overnights, day programs, scout programs, camps, etc.
- Attend community outreach events such as science nights, career days, mascot events, etc.
- Participate in special conservation events.
- Handle program animals as trained.
- Direct school groups during check-in on busy days.
- Communicate potential issues with animals and exhibits to Habitat Curators and Life Support.
- Complete daily exhibit opening and closing checklists.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Report supply needs to Education Manager.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work area.
- Adhere to the Landry’s Personal Appearance Policy.
- Complete special projects as directed.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in education or science-related field completed or in progress is preferred. Other degree fields will be considered such as theater and communication.
- 1-2 years of customer service experience preferred.
- Good speaking voice and excellent communication skills.
- Enjoys working with children of all ages and abilities.
- Comfortable with handling live animals for demonstrations.
- Able to work with other crewmembers in all departments in a professional manner.
- Observant.
- Organized.
- Self-motivated.
- Reliable transportation.
- Spanish fluency is a plus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Subject to possibility of animal bites, scratches, and stings.
- Outdoor work required on occasion under variety of conditions: cold weather, hot weather, rain, and sunshine.
