Exhibits Technician

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our Exhibits Department as a Museum Technician II. Reporting to the Museum Curator Supervisor, this position will participate in the collaborative maintenance, upkeep, design, and development of themed exhibits and displays. The Museum Technician II must be humble, self-aware, creative, and organized. They must possess exceptional communication skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to think critically and problem solve in the moment, while working on simultaneous projects with deadlines.  


Key Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the maintenance, repair, construction, and assembly of interior and exterior displays, graphics, interactives, and all associated structures. This involves the safe operation of hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment/materials. 
  • Plan and execute the fabrication of three-dimensional exhibit components. Projects may range from creating utilitarian exhibit structures (stands, platforms, shelves, cabinets) to creating artificial habitat structures (trees, reefs, plants).
  • Create and source materials necessary for production or repairs, including creatively re-utilizing existing materials and maintaining inventory of materials.
  • Plan and execute the graphic design of various two-dimensional exhibit components including banners, informational signs, and directional signs.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments towards creating and maintaining all exhibits.
  • Learn and contribute to all Exhibits Department projects, as assigned, including graphic design, fabrication, multimedia, and printing.
  • Must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, work in a team as well as independently, and handle multiple projects/tasks.

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC, nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 61,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 2200 animals. More than 280,000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see a large array of sharks, learn about sea turtle conservation, participate in a variety of programs, enjoy the beauty of the area, and learn why North Carolina’s waterways are so special.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Demonstrated experience in exhibit construction, fabrication, and carpentry.
  • Demonstrated experience in graphic design for exhibits, displays, advertising, or educational purposes.
  • Demonstrated work experience in design principles and applications in producing two- and three- dimensional art.
  • Experience using hand and power tools.
  • Experience fabricating with a variety of mediums such as wood, plastics, laminate, resins, epoxies, cement, adhesives, etc.
  • Experience with using computer graphics software.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move or lift objects.
  • Requires evenings, weekends, and holiday work as needed.
  • Must have a valid NC driver's license or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Management Preferences:
  • Experience working in a public aquarium, zoo, nature center, or similar setting.
  • Background in the care, installation, display, and packing of fine art and museum-grade art and artifacts.
  • Forklift and scissor lift certification
  • First aid and CPR certification
Experience Required

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience in museum related work in area of assignment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
