Exhibits Technician II - Scientific Exhibits

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is looking for an individual with the skills and interest to develop audio-visual experiences and lighting schemes that will contribute to memorable experiences for our guests. The ideal candidate also will have relevant experience with exhibit design in a museum or similar setting, along with experience in rough and finish carpentry; electronic and computer repair; plumbing; and mechanical systems. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is necessary for success in this position.

Duties include the following:

  • Lead projects as assigned by the Senior Curator involving cost estimation, design, and build of new or upgraded audio-visual and interactive experiences that may incorporate electronics, computers, or mechanical systems

  • Develop repair and maintenance protocols for audio-visual and lighting systems.  Lead training on repair and maintenance techniques for Exhibit Technician Is and part-time staff.

  • Maintain and repair computer and A/V exhibit components including monitors, computers, software, speakers, sound and video, acrylics, display cases, cabinetry, graphic panels, backlit graphic panels, digital signage, banners, electrical components, and Arduino switches.

  • Maintain and repair electrical wiring, mechanical components.

  • Clean filter systems in interactive water features.

  • Conduct research on materials and techniques to ensure selection of appropriate materials for each job and follow best practices in construction and repair.

  • Diagnose chronic or systemic defects in individual exhibits that reduce efficiency, reliability, and intended function and recommend modifications

  • Collaborate with co-workers to tackle daily tasks such as exhibit start-up, solve repair problems, identify cost-saving measures, select materials and supplies, and develop best practices for accomplishing tasks effectively and efficiently.

  • Assist Senior Curator with developing annual budget requests and allocating resources throughout the fiscal year.

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment by modeling appropriate use of tools and equipment and ensuring staff follow safety procedures.

  • Direct daily work of Exhibit Technician Is, volunteers, and hourly staff and ensure they have training and supplies needed to complete tasks.

  • Greet guests and provide basic information about the aquarium when doing work in the public areas.

  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on current workloads and department needs.


Experience Required

MINIMUMS: Any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields such as museum, aquarium, zoo or science center exhibits work that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a valid driver's license.


Further Comments

The ideal candidate will have the following preferences. Hands-on skills and experience in developing and maintaining audio-visual experiences or lighting systems More than one (1) year of experience as an employee in an aquarium, museum, science center, or similar field with experience as an interactive exhibit technician, audio-visual technician, or lighting specialist Demonstrated experience designing and constructing interactive exhibits Experience leading team projects
