The New England Aquarium (NEAq) is committed to a vibrant and vital ocean for future generations. NEAq's BalanceBlue Lab amplifies ocean health and conservation by engaging private-sector collaborators and driving ocean-friendly practices into the global seafood sector. The Program Officer acts as a wild fisheries & aquaculture subject matter expert for the BalanceBlue Lab.

  • This is a full-time, 1-year, grant-funded position with the possibility for extension based on funding.
  • The position offers a comprehensive benefits package.
  • The schedule will be Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm with a remote work schedule.
  • The position will require occasional travel locally and internationally for conferences, events, and fishery/aquaculture site visits.
  • Remote days are only available for residents of MA, RI, NH, ME, NY and VT.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Collect and analyze data, write reports, and prepare presentations on aquaculture operations and wild fisheries to support industry, innovators, and investors in acting on ocean-related issues for responsible use and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with companies to establish metrics and promote the use of environmentally friendly practices.
  • This includes evaluating and advising corporations and startups on their impact on the ocean and ways to mitigate them.
  • Produce and/or source information needed for social media and media requests, write grant reports and proposals, and represent NEAq at public events.
  • Assume project management duties and investigate the status of global aquaculture operations, wild fisheries, and related practices, management, and collateral impacts.
Provide technical expertise including:
  • Develop new assessment tools and approaches for assessing aquaculture and fisheries environmental impacts.
  • Review claims and collateral impacts associated with fisheries and aquaculture operations.
  • Research market-based solutions (e.g., certifications) for aquaculture and fisheries.
  • Review and producing summary reports, memos, position statements, or other deliverables.
  • Translate scientific concepts and materials for business audiences. 
  • Develop and maintain open lines of communication with the business community, scientists, and policy makers.
  • Attend and present work at conferences or other public forums.
  • Provide leadership within the team and ACCOL in aquaculture and fisheries by participating on steering committees, boards, and/or technical committees.
  • Provide topic-area expertise and mentorship for early-stage blue innovation companies, including conducting due diligence, facilitating customer discovery interviews, data gathering, and validating environmental impact metrics.
  • Support funding activities of the program, such as developing/reviewing statements of work and funding proposals.
  • Support institution-wide policy and educational activities.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the team and contribute to similar deliverables in the blue innovation space as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in marine science, environmental economics, or other fisheries/aquaculture related field; equivalent professional experience in ocean or environmental health will be considered.
  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience related to fisheries and/or aquaculture, ocean conservation or similar.
  • Experience successfully managing multiple projects simultaneously with diverse team dynamics, including a remote work environment. Experience managing projects with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators, industry representatives, corporations, entrepreneurs, impact investors, and/or conservation groups preferred.
  • Must have a solid understanding of global fisheries and/or aquaculture, and regional ocean conservation issues, preferably with related professional experience.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret technical information from scientific teams efficiently.
  • A genuine interest in, and passion for, the important ocean and marine animal conservation mission of the NEAq.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Strong copywriting skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze and interpret data to make informed decisions.
