Herpetology - Invertebrate Keeper

General Description: Under direct supervision of the Herpetology Managers, preforms a variety of duties related to care, and maintenance of our invertebrate collection. This position is union, hourly non-exempt and requires forty hours per week. This position is to mainly to care for our feeder insect colonies and work in our arthropod area within the Museum of Science.

Specific Job Duties:

• Care and propagate the zoos feeder insect colonies. (Crickets, mealworms, soldier flies, roaches, and fruit flies).
• Setting up cricket egg laying containers daily.
• Sifting mealworms and egg collection.
• Sifting soldier fly larvae daily.
• Separating out roaches to set up new colonies.
• Work closely with other depts. on live feeder deliveries.
• Work with our Arthropod collection in the Museum of Science.
• Maintain exhibits, maintain off exhibit colonies.
• Must be familiar with USDA APHIS regulations.
• This position will work with a variety of arthropods.
• Beetles, Phasmids, Scorpions, Spiders, Roaches, etc.
• Enter data in ZIMS.
• Preform swing keeping duties
• This position works in very hot and humid environments.
• Must be able to lift min 50lbs frequently.
• Must have good data keeping skills and observation skills.
• Must excel in problem solving and communication skills.
• Must maintain a clean and organized work area.

Experience Required

Bachelor’s degree preferred. Requires an Associate degree in Zoology or an applied science related to actual animal care and two years zookeeper experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable by the fleet insurance carrier.
