Hospital Manager

In coordination with the Vice President of Zoological Operations, the Hospital Manager will oversee all aspects of the hospital, manage the daily operations and assist in the daily medical care of the Aquarium’s living collection.

Qualifications:  
  •  Bachelor’s degree or a graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary technical program preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with zoo, wildlife, or exotic animals.
  • High level of clinical skill (or ability to develop) with all taxa represented in the Aquarium’s living collection.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • This position bears primary responsibility for the daily function and operation of the Aquarium’s Veterinary Services Department, including but not limited to:
  • Coordinating between teams to facilitate scheduling of exams and clinical procedures both on and off-site.
  • Providing veterinary technical support for clinical and diagnostic healthcare of an extremely diverse collection of zoo and aquarium animals.
  • Assist with euthanasia and post-mortem examinations.
  • Provide primary clinical support (in consultation with a veterinarian) in response to emergency and critical care cases
  • Perform all duties related to purchasing of pharmaceuticals, hospital and laboratory supplies, and proper disposal of expired drugs and supplies.
  • Maintain biohazardous waste, sharps disposal, and controlled drug tracking programs.
  • Use independent judgement and discretion to establish and implement standard operating procedures, ensuring efficient overall hospital operation.
  • Assist with development and management of animal health annual budget, maintaining accurate and current records for accounting.
  • Ensure compliance of all hospital operations in line with the standards of accrediting and regulatory bodies, including OSHA, USDA, AZA, DEA, DWR, and USFWS.
  • Ensure accurate record keeping for all cases utilizing ZIMS, a web-based digital medical records system. Work with Species360 to develop new capacities in support of departmental needs.
  • Primary management of departmental projects, including capital, to expand veterinary diagnostic, clinical, and infrastructural capabilities.
  • Participate in industry CE to ensure continued up-to-date awareness of veterinary best practices and changing trends
  • Other duties as assigned.
