Husbandry Assistant

This position is responsible for assisting the day-to-day husbandry operations in the Aquarium.  Primary responsibilities include the assisting with care and wellbeing of all animals under the facility’s care; assisting in maintenance of all habitats; and positive team approach within the Life Sciences Department.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Clean, maintain, and repair animal habitats. 
  • Clean and maintain Life Sciences areas. 
  • Assist with diet preparation and feeding of animals.  
  • Observe and communicate any animal health concerns. 
  • Care for, handle, and work safely with a variety of live animals, including mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. 
  • Provide superior guest interactions.  
  • Maintain up-to-date electronic and hard-copy records on animal husbandry and maintenance, as necessary.  
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with Guest Experience Department and the Aquarium Foundation.  
  • Maintain positive and professional representation of animals, life sciences department, and institution. 
  • Compliance with health and safety standards in accordance with local municipality, state and federal rules and regulations.  
  • Compliance of all policy and procedures. 
  • Assist in emergency situations to minimize damage, loss or injury to guests, team members, animals or company property. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
Abilities
  • The individual must possess the following abilities to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some or a combination of the abilities. 
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time. 
  • Ability to read, listen, and communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.  
  • Ability to access and accurately input information using a moderately complex computer system.
  • Hearing and visual ability to observe and detect signs of emergency situations.  
  • Requires the ability to perform the physical, visual, and hearing requirements in the working conditions below
Experience Required
  • Excellent guest interaction/entertainment/interpretation skills 
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions well
  • Excellent at working independently and within a team 
  • Professional demeanor, reliable, strong work ethic, positive attitude, and dedicated to the mission of zoos & aquariums
