What you’ll do
- Conduct routine visual inspections on all life support systems
- Monitor Life Support Systems (LSS) and ensure ideal operation of equipment
- Perform and assist with preventative and corrective maintenance, repair, and replacement of LSS equipment
- Problem solve and resolve mechanical failures and LSS inefficiencies
- General housekeeping duties including keeping work spaces and equipment clean and professional in appearance
- Assist with teaching and training biologists and engineers on all aspects of LSS installation, maintenance and repair
- Assist with writing SOP’s for operation of or preventative maintenance on equipment
- Assist third-party facilities contractors on all large exhibit LSS
- Assist with installations of equipment upgrades and new equipment pertaining to LSS
- Maintain all back-up equipment inventory
- Maintain and organize all tools for the husbandry department
- Work with leadership and biologists to develop, coordinate and complete projects
- Assist with R & D and completion of exhibit development projects and training of exhibit enhancement techniques
- This position has been identified as having Safety Critical and Authorized Operator requirements
- Assist with Water Quality analysis and other lab duties
- Other duties as assigned
What you’ll bring
- Prior experience operating aquatic filtration systems including but not limited to sand filters, ozone generators, heat exchangers, pumps, foam fractionators, and U.V. filters is preferred.
- Basic knowledge in plumbing PVC. Electrical knowledge is a plus. Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Excellent observation and verbal and written communication skills
- Previous husbandry experience is helpful.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a constantly changing environment as well as individually, with minimal supervision
- Ability to learn quickly through hands-on experience
- Knowledge and ability to use hand and power tools
- Dive certification from a recognized S.C.U.B.A. training organization preferred or the ability to become certified
- Ability to travel, when necessary, usually not to exceed four weeks at one time.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, weekends are mandatory once trained and may include evenings and holidays. Ability to respond to emergencies on an on-call basis.
- ALLSO LSS and Water Quality Certification level 1 or the ability to obtain certification.
- Must be able to drive a vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Working knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook preferred
- Ability to communicate to visitors, vendors and staff effectively and professionally

- S Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and background check
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Ability to climb stairs, ladders, bend and stoop, and work safely in wet and slippery conditions
Note: This position will involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species, and potentially hazardous machinery, restraint devices, and toxic chemicals and drugs. Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required. (e.g., Goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns)
