JOB SUMMARY:
- Responsible for troubleshooting, designing, planning, and implementing repair and construction projects for mechanical equipment throughout building facilities, vehicles, boats, and life support systems. Orders and installs components and parts for necessary tasks.
- Assists life support operators and other maintenance technicians in various assignments as needed. May be required to work after normal working hours.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Adhere to the South Carolina Aquarium Policies.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, replace a variety of pumps and electric motors.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, plan and perform all mechanical operations necessary to modify, dismantle, repair, overhaul, and rebuild all types of complicated mechanical systems for building, vehicles, boats, and life support systems.
- Identify improvement projects and submit plan of action.
- Maintain appropriate spare parts inventory.
- Provide training to staff on associated mechanical equipment.
- Performs and recommends preventative maintenance tasks as needed. Including using vibration analysis and laser alignment techniques.
- Perform minor fabrication tasks.
- Able to work flexible hours throughout the week including weekends. May be called on after-hours for emergency work.
- Must be able to operate a company vehicle while meeting company insurance eligibility requirements.
- Maintains outstanding housekeeping standards.
- Maintains workshop equipment properly.
- Capable of using appropriate administrative tools to keep accurate maintenance records.
- Assists internal and external staff as needed.
- Read and understand blueprints, as-builts, and specification sheets.
OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supports the mission by participating in Aquarium sponsored programs and events on a regular basis.
- Support Husbandry and Facility staff in assignments as needed.
- Required member of the Severe Weather Rideout or Recovery Team
KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Welding and soldering skills.
- Experience with industrial and pool pumps
- Understands proper use of industrial tools and equipment.
- Experienced in plumbing, HVAC, and other relevant mechanical systems.
- Detail oriented.
- Effective communicator.
- Understands animal care issues related to facilities and life support systems.
- Able to be trained in ozone system repairs and maintenance.
- Able to be trained in HVAC controls computer system.
- An understanding of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Working on heights of 20' or more on scissor Lift
LICENSED & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Valid Driver's License
- Forklift experience
- Scissor lift experience

Experience Required
- EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 1-year relevant experience in maintaining aquatic life support systems.
