We are seeking a Maintenance Technician to perform a variety of tasks pertaining to general maintenance and repair of zoo grounds, facilities, and equipment. This position may include some guest interaction. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe work environment for employees, guests and the animal collection. This position reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
- Performs routine and preventative maintenance and repair on all zoo buildings and equipment.
- Ability to operate various hand tools, power tools and vehicles.
- Must be familiar with various painting practices.
- Graphic installations.
- May operate specialized equipment such as dump truck, sweeper, sander, front-end loader, skid loader, backhoe, forklift, snowplow, garbage truck, and Ditch Witch.
- May assists in waste removal and recycling.
- May assist in training students and/or interns.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to operate, or ability to learn to operate, standard maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of basic construction practices and methods.
- Ability to communicate basic maintenance facts and answer questions for guests.
- Possess and perform basic carpentry duties including framing, drywall, trim work, and other various woodworking skills.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform general maintenance tasks including concrete work, framing, drywall, trim work, painting, plumbing, minor electrical and HVAC work and other maintenance skills.
- Must possess visual acuity appropriate for maintenance work and general safety practices.
- Candidates might be required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative TB test, and possess a valid drivers license with a good history.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
- Employee will be regularly exposed to water,
- chemicals,
- loud noises,
- dust,
- dander,
- hay,
- etc.
- Frequently exposed to all outside weather conditions.
- Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some nights.
- Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
- Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, crouch, stoop, twist, reach above head and climb.
- Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
