Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator

This is a time-limited position. It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits for a limited time. Although the length of time this position will be active cannot be determined, it has the potential to extend up to 3 years (36 months).

Position will function as a Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator for the North Carolina Aquariums at Jennette’s Pier & Roanoke Island 

 

Primary Purpose of the position:
  • The marine mammal stranding coordinator position is the lead Aquarium staff member at Jennette’s Pier (JP) and the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island (NCARI) responsible for coordinating all aspects of marine mammal stranding response in our designated coverage area under the federal stranding agreement with NOAA.
  • The position’s purpose is to ensure that all marine mammal stranding response operations are effective, efficient, safe, and are performed cooperatively with our partners in the region and across the State of NC.
  • The position works with JP and NCARl staff, responders and veterinarians from partner organizations, and trained volunteers to successfully respond to marine mammal strandings following all regulations related to the federal stranding agreement, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Endangered Species Act.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitoring and answering the stranding hotline, direct stranding response coordination and logistics, data collection and management, performing necropsies, and transport of specimens. 
  • Responsible for onsite outreach to the public, assisting the development of curriculum and exhibits, and contributing to media communications. 
  • Recruits, coordinates, trains, and supervises a team of volunteers. 
  • Assists partners in scientific research projects and program development. 
  • Assists in grant writing, submitting progress reports, maintaining permits, and managing a program budget.
  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work required. Occasional travel is required for Aquarium meetings. Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below:
  • Knowledge and experience with Level A and Human Interaction data reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience complying with sampling protocols, sample processing, and shipment procedures.
  • Experience responding to a minimum of 5 live marine mammal stranding events.
  • Knowledge and experience monitoring marine mammal vital signs.
  • Must have a valid NC Driver's License or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire. 
Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, or science curriculum related to the area of expertise from an appropriately accredited institution and two-years’ experience in specialty area or a Master’s degree in a natural science area may be substituted for experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary
  • $38,516 - $45,000
