At the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, our mission is to empower people and save wildlife. We are looking for a dedicated Pinniped Specialist to join our team in caring for and educating the public about our pinniped collection. This role will involve a combination of animal care, public presentations, and behind-the-scenes work to ensure the wellbeing of our animals while engaging and inspiring zoo visitors.

- Responsibilities
Animal Care & Wellbeing:
- Assist the Pinniped team in providing daily care for the pinniped collection, including health assessments, disease diagnosis and treatment, and feeding.
- Administer vitamins and prescribed medications as required.
- Focus on animal behavior maintenance and assist with training and enrichment programs.
- Maintain clean, safe, and well-organized animal habitats, including pools, docks, and holding areas.
Public Engagement & Education:
- Present engaging educational presentations to zoo visitors, inspiring them about wildlife conservation.
- Lead "Behind-the-Scenes" tours and special programs for VIP events and guests.
- Provide daily program and theater setup, ensuring high-quality educational experiences for guests.
- Share your expertise to raise awareness about animal care, conservation issues, and species preservation.
Collaboration & Teamwork:
- Work alongside other animal care staff to ensure best practices in animal care, safety, and wellbeing.
- Participate in staff meetings and collaborate across departments to uphold Zoo standards and operational efficiency.
- Contribute to a positive and cooperative team culture within the Pinniped department and across the Zoo.
Compliance & Safety:
- Follow all safety protocols and professional standards, including USDA, AZA, AMMPA, and ZAA guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with Zoo safety policies and practices in all tasks and public interactions.
Experience Required
- Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required; BA/BS in education, animal sciences, or a related field is preferred.
- At least 1 year of experience working with animals, with an emphasis on marine mammals, including training and care, is required.
- Public speaking experience and the ability to confidently present to large audiences is a must.
Technical & Interpersonal Skills:
- Strong knowledge of animal care, behavior, and conservation issues.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with diverse audiences.
- Ability to work well in a team, fostering positive relationships with colleagues and guests.
- A positive attitude and a commitment to upholding guest service standards and the Zoo's mission.

- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to remain composed and focused in high-pressure situations.
