The Security Officer provides professional security services to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations at the South Carolina Aquarium, including the Main Building and the Boeing Learning Lab (BLL). This position supports daily operations, weekday educational programming, and scheduled special events while maintaining a visible security presence and delivering excellent customer service. Security Officers ensure the safety and security of staff, guests, volunteers, contractors, facilities, and animal care operations by monitoring building systems, controlling access, conducting patrols, responding to incidents, and coordinating with internal departments and external emergency responders as needed.
Essential Functions
- Adhere to all Aquarium policies, procedures, and Security Department General Orders.
- Maintain a visible and professional security presence at assigned locations.
- Control access to facilities and monitor surveillance camera systems.
- Monitor alarm panels, building automation systems, and life safety systems.
- Conduct routine patrols and security rounds; identify and report concerns.
- Support weekday school programs at the Boeing Learning Lab.
- Provide coverage for scheduled special events, including evenings as needed.
- Assist with daytime security coverage at the Main Building.
- Coordinate emergency response with Fire, Law Enforcement, and EMS.
- Utilize conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
- Assist with lost and found, lost child procedures, and guest assistance.
- Provide basic first aid and medical assistance.
- Complete clear and timely incident reports.
- Issue and manage access credentials, badges, permits, and keys.
- Secure buildings at closing and support evening transitions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Basic computer proficiency (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Physical & Working Conditions

Experience Required
- Education and Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain SLED security licensing.
- Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
- Completion of required internal training programs.
