Senior Education Specialist

Reporting into the Manager, Learning/Innovation & Impact, as a part of the Conservation Education team, the Senior Education Specialist position takes a senior role in developing curriculum for new and current program and teaches a variety of education programs to students in a variety of settings for different programs. The Senior Education Specialist may serve school groups, students, volunteers, teachers, and home-school students inside the Aquarium, at schools in the region, and at sites in the field. The Senior Education Specialist helps to guide the strategy for curriculum, develops and presents teacher training and teacher orientations. The Senior Education Specialist will support the advancement of all Conservation Education Programs and will work collaboratively to deliver engaging, exceptional experiences to support or create hopeful conservationists.

  • The Senior Education Specialist is responsible for the capture and evaluation of program data.
  • The Senior Education Specialist is visible to external partners, serving as a representative for all the Conservation Education programs that the National Aquarium delivers.
  • The Senior Education Specialist prepares supporting documentation for grant progress reporting, partnering with all other members of the team to gather the data and updates.
  • Additionally, recording and reporting program data for internal and external communication and assessment purposes is a critical area of responsibility for the role and achieving stated outcomes for Conservation Education.
  • In order to ensure compliance, the Senior Education Specialist takes a lead role in the organization, maintenance and storage of education materials, as well as ensuring all compliance documentation, such as waivers are in order for each program as necessary.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Supports and helps to inform the strategy for curriculum and programs aligned with Conservation Education goals.
  • Develops plans and curriculum, as well as delivers on-site and off-site youth education programming, including field study trips.
  • Researches and identifies opportunities to streamline or improve existing programs in alignment with Conservation Education goals.
  • Develops and maintains regular reporting tools to gather program data that informs grant progress reports as well as any reporting needs for internal and external communications or results reporting.
  • Tracks expenses for program and assists Manager, Education programs with budgets and reports as necessary to ensure fiscal management of the overall program and grant management.
  • Develops and captures program participant evaluation data used for reporting on outcomes, program evaluation and assessment.
  • Represents the National Aquarium at internal and external events, serving as an ambassador for the organization and the high-quality conservation education programs provided by the team.
  • Manages compliance needs for programs as necessary, such as forms and waivers.
  • Work effectively as a member of a team and with a wide range of audiences and colleagues in a professional manner.
  • Writes and edits materials required to support the delivery of Conservation Education programs.
  • Oversees progress towards specific program goals as set by VP, Conservation Education and Manager, Education Programs.
  • Maintains and updates information files relating to process documentation, surveys, activities and programs.
  • Assists as needed in any other education program activities, such as camps.
  • Assists with training staff and volunteers to deliver youth education programs.
  • Supervise and oversee staff or volunteers who are assisting during programs and field study trips.
  • Supports additional department activities such as outreach education programs, cultural events, fairs/festivals, youth programs, volunteer training, and special evening events.
  • In partnership with Program Lead, tracks expenses for program and assists with budgets and reports as necessary to ensure fiscal management of the overall program and grant management.
  • Collaborates with Philanthropy to support any information requests for grant management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, education, or related field or combination of experience and education required.
  • At least three to five years of experience working with students is required, preferably in a non-formal education setting. STEM Background Preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • First Aid/CPR, wilderness first aid, canoe and kayak instruction and/or lifeguard certifications are desirable.
  • Current Maryland driver’s license and a clean driving record. Possess or is able to acquire a DOT License and able to safely operate an 8-15 passenger van.
  • Working knowledge of educational technology, social media, and digital learning formats. Highly proficient in MS Office,
  • Excel, PowerPoint and other appropriate programs.
