Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium Security Supervisor will assist in developing, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating the Zoo's physical safety and security program to ensure a safe environment for all students, staff and visitors. The Supervisor of Security is responsible for the security of all campus facilities, animal collection, and other physical assets of the Zoo during both business and non-business hours. This position provides direct supervision of the entire Security Department.

Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions (include but not limited to):
  • Supervise, evaluate, and schedule full time security personnel.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and schedule part-time seasonal personnel.
  • Assist in Safety Committee meetings.
  • Assist in running drills including required AZA drills.
  • Monitor and track employee work hours via computer.
  • Train all new and existing security personnel.
  • Assist in safety audits of areas for guest, student and staff security.
  • Monitor and upgrade the duties of the security team based on current trends and needs.
  • Monitor and evaluate security surveillance systems.
  • Act as Vehicle Control Officer for security fleet of vehicles to insure proper care and maintenance.
  • Maintain key records for staff and contractors, including assigned keys and key box access.
  • Maintain and assign prox card access to new and existing staff through the control access software.
  • Assess maintenance trends on door handles, locks, cores and keys to assist with budgetary needs.
  • Assessing needs and trends based on data to improve security throughout the facility.
  • Responsible for the review, maintenance, and action on all Security Incident Reports to include file dispositions and records maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Prior experience in security and/or resource protection preferred but not necessary.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • High school graduate with at least two years’ experience in public safety or security related field, or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and odd working hours.
  • Must be at least eighteen years old.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
  • Must have good interpersonal and communicative skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in handling emergency situations.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office products and the ability to use an IBM compatible computer.
  • Be able to vary their own schedule so as to properly fulfill the above requirements as well as to help fill in for personnel when sick/vacation/trade time is being used.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provides direct supervision of the entire Security Team.
  • Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Physically able to walk and remain on feet for up to 8 hours, as well as work up to 16 hours at a time.
  • Must be able to exert a minimum of 25 pounds of force and able to lift, carry, push or pull or otherwise move objects whose weight may exceed 25 pounds.
  • Ability to navigate all areas of the Zoo over a variety of terrain, including behind-the-scenes, lawns, gravel, hilltop, and attic storage.
Travel Required
  • Occasional conferences and training.
  • Remote Work
  • This is to be determined in conjunction with the Department Head and Zoo policy.
  • Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in education, biological sciences or applicable field; master’s or doctorate degrees preferred.
  • Work authorization
  • List any visa requirements, H1B sponsorship or special clearances.
